Dr. Subir Majumder is a power and energy systems researcher who studies how emerging large electricity loads, including Bitcoin-mining facilities and AI data centers, interact with electricity markets and the power grid. His research goes beyond treating these loads as abstract demand at the power grid boundary by modeling the internal economic and operational processes that shape their electricity consumption, variability, and flexibility. His work spans power and energy systems, emerging large electricity loads, demand flexibility, energy economics, optimization, and AI- and data-driven methods.
Dr. Majumder received his Ph.D. in Electrical Power Engineering through a cotutelle agreement between the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India, and the University of Wollongong, Australia, under the supervision of Prof. S. A. Khaparde and Prof. A. P. Agalgaonkar. He also holds an M.Tech. in Energy Systems Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and a B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from Kalyani Government Engineering College. He has held research appointments at Washington State University and West Virginia University with Prof. Anurag Srivastava, and subsequently at Texas A&M University and Harvard University with Prof. Le Xie. In 2020, Dr. Majumder received the POSOCO Power System Award in the doctoral category. More recently, he was selected as a Tocqueville Fellow at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University to explore the intersection of Bitcoin, political economy, and philosophy.
